The cathedral on the territory of Akhiza Fortress was built during the reign of King Vakhtang Gorgasali, while conducting renovation and restoration by the local Duke Artavaz. Akhizi Eparchy ceased to exist as a consequence of Arab invasions in the mid-seventh century, whereas the cathedral must have been destroyed following the conquest of Tao-Klarjeti by Ottomans.
