The croix-libre type domed church built in the seventh-eighth centuries was transformed into a hall-type structure in the tenth – eleventh centuries.

Two lapidary and fresco asomtavruli inscriptions dated to the tenth-eleventh centuries are preserved on the façade and in the interior of the church. In the east corner of the south façade the inscription reads: ((ႫႨႣႠ)(ႨႭႰႢ)| Ⴘ Ⴅ Ⴇ | ႢႨ ႸႤ St. George, have mercy on She(?) t(?)); in the interior the painted inscription Ⴀ ႲႴႨႪ is executed on the jamb of the chancel window. They are incomplete and do not contain any direct account about construction, renovation or painting of the church.
