The church was built and embellished with painting under the donorship of three brothers – Bende, Amrola and Michael – of the Amroleans family, during the reign of the King of the Abkhazaians (probably Bagrat III) and the rule of the Eristavi Vakhtang (Vakhdang). Names of historical persons are mentioned in fresco inscriptions (see in the paintings), as well as on the graffito (inscription of the Eristavi Vakhdang) that also date to the 10th century.
