It is presumed that carving out of the church and decorating it with murals, as well as arranging of the monastic center there took place when building activities and pilgrimage became more intense in the Gareja monastic complex during the life of St. Ilarion Kartveli. The church preserves over fifty incised inscriptions that refer to either construction, commemoration or supplication and are executed between the ninth and the thirteenth centuries.
