The church was built as the Catholikon of the Kakhuli Lavra. Its construction is associated with King David III Curopalates of Tao-Klarjeti. The church is diversely significant by its architecture, relief decoration and painting. Epigraphy of the church has scantily been preserved. The monastery was an important center of literacy in the country.
