Chancel<\/h6>\n

Only the chancel conch was painted in a small hall-type church carved out into the rock on the eastern edge of the monastery of St. John the Baptist. It shows the composition of the Deesis<\/em> with half-length figures of the Savior, the Virgin and St, John the Baptist. The savior (\u1f38<\/strong>(<\/strong>\u03b7\u03c3\u03bf<\/strong>\u1fe6<\/strong>)<\/strong>\u03c2<\/strong> \u03a7(\u03c1\u03b9\u03c3\u03c4<\/strong>\u1f78<\/strong>)<\/strong>\u03c2<\/strong> \u2013<\/strong> Jesus Christ<\/strong>) is depicted in the center with His right hand raised in blessing and the Bible in His left hand. On the left is the Virgin (<\/strong>\u039c(\u03ae\u03c4\u03b7)\u03c1 \u0398(\u03b5\u03bf)<\/strong>\u1fe6<\/strong> \u2013 Mother of God), <\/strong>on the right \u2013 St. John the Baptist (the inscription is destroyed). They are both depicted with their hands raised in supplication and facing Christ. The painted layer has suffered considerable damage over centuries; due to collapse of the plastering the images have survived in fragments, the upper layer of the painting is obliterated.<\/p>\n\n
