Painted in the year 6700 after the creation of the world, in koronikon 316, by hand of Tevdore, the king\u2019s painter. Holy Archangels have mercy<\/strong> (<em>Svanet\u2019is ts\u2019erilobit\u2019i dzeglebi (X\u2013XVIII ss.), II, epigrap\u2019ikuli dzeglebi, tek\u2019stebi gamosatsemad moamzada, gamokvlevebi da sametsniero-satsnobaro aparati daurt\u2019o valeri silogavam [Svaneti Literary Monuments (10th\u2013XVIIIth cc.), II, Epigraphical Monuments, rdited by Valeri Silogava]<\/em> (Tbilisi, 1988), 70-1).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h6 style=\"text-align: justify;\">of the Painter(s)<\/h6>\n<p>The same inscription.<\/p>\n\n<hr \/>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: justify;\">Description<\/h4>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Murals cover the wall, vault and chancel screen completely. They are distributed in two registres both in the chancel and the hall.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h6 style=\"text-align: justify;\">Chancel<\/h6>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">A short variety of the scene of the <em>Deesis<\/em> &#8211; half-length figures of the Savior flanked by the Virgin and St. John the Baptist in supplication &#8211; is represented in the conch. Christ has an open codex which has preserved only a fragment of once existing inscription (<strong>[&#8230;]\u10a2 [&#8230;]\u10a8\u10a4\u10aa <\/strong>\u2013 <strong>Gabriel<\/strong>) in the left hand.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In the second registre, there are two figures of saints on each side of the window; probably, the saint represented full-length south of the window is an apostle (the image is hardly discernible); next to him is a half-length figure of a bishop (only a codex is visible); the saint depicted north of the window is probably an apostle too; next to him is a half-length figure of St. Basil the Great (<strong>\u10bc<\/strong><strong>(\u10ab\u10a8\u10a3\u10a0)<\/strong><strong>\u10c2<\/strong> \u2013 <strong>Saint<\/strong>). On the edges of the apse, on both sides, candles lit in candelabra are depicted.<\/p>\n<p>Traces of painting are also discernible on the altar.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h6 style=\"text-align: justify;\">Chancel Screen<\/h6>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Half-length frontal figures of four saints are depicted between the arches of the three-span chancel screen: south of the holy door \u2013 St. Kvirike (<strong>\u10bc<\/strong><strong>(\u10ab\u10a8\u10a3\u10a0)<\/strong><strong>\u10c2<\/strong><strong> | \u10a9<\/strong><strong>(\u10a5\u10a8\u10b0\u10a8\u10a9)<\/strong><strong>\u10a4<\/strong> \u2013 <strong>Saint Cyricus<\/strong>) and St. Ivlita (<strong>\u10bc<\/strong><strong>(\u10ab\u10a8\u10a3\u10a0)<\/strong><strong>\u10c2<\/strong><strong> | \u10a8\u10a5\u10aa\u10a8\u10b2\u10a0<\/strong> \u2013 <strong>Saint Julitta<\/strong>) are depicted holding a cross; north \u2013 St. Stephan (<strong>\u10bc<\/strong><strong>(\u10ab\u10a8\u10a3\u10a0)<\/strong><strong>\u10c2<\/strong><strong> | \u10b1\u10b2\u10a4\u10b4<\/strong><strong>(<\/strong><strong>\u10a0<\/strong><strong>)<\/strong><strong>\u10ac\u10a4<\/strong> \u2013 <strong>Saint Stephan<\/strong>) holding an incense burner and a reliquarium, next to him \u2013 St. Demetre (<strong>\u10bc<\/strong><strong>(\u10ab\u10a8\u10a3\u10a0)<\/strong><strong>\u10c2<\/strong><strong> | \u10a3\u10a4\u10ab\u10a4\u10b2\u10b0\u10a4<\/strong> \u2013 <strong>Saint Demetre<\/strong>) is also depicted with a cross. There are candles in the corners (similar to those in the chancel). A donor inscription which also mentions the painter of the church \u2013 \u2018King\u2019s Painter\u2019 Tevdore &#8211; runs along the whole length of the chancel entablement.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h6 style=\"text-align: justify;\">Aisle<\/h6>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In the upper registreof <strong>the west wall <\/strong><em>the Annunciation<\/em> (<strong>\u10be\u10a0[<\/strong><strong>\u10b0<\/strong><strong>]\u10a4\u10a1\u10a0\u10c2 <\/strong>\u2013 <strong>Annunciation<\/strong>) is distributed on both sides; near the figure of St. Archangel Gabriel (<strong>\u10a2<\/strong><strong>(<\/strong><strong>\u10a0<\/strong><strong>)<\/strong><strong>\u10a1<\/strong><strong>(\u10b0\u10a8\u10a4\u10aa) <\/strong>\u2013 <strong>Gabriel<\/strong>), in the lower row full-length frontal figures of holy mothers holding crosses: the one depicted south of the entrance with a headscarf and a mantilla wrapped around the neck is St. Barbara (<strong>\u10bc<\/strong><strong>(\u10ab\u10a8\u10a3\u10a0)<\/strong><strong>\u10c2<\/strong><strong> | \u10a1\u10a0\u10b0\u10a1\u10a0\u10b0\u10a0 <\/strong>\u2013 <strong>Saint Barbara<\/strong>), on the north is St. Catherine (<strong>\u10bc<\/strong><strong>(\u10ab\u10a8\u10a3\u10a0)<\/strong><strong>\u10c2<\/strong><strong> | \u10a4\u10a9\u10a9\u10a0\u10b2\u10a4\u10b0\u10a8\u10ac\u10a4 <\/strong>\u2013 <strong>Saint Catherine<\/strong>) wearing a crown.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In the first registre of <strong>the south wall<\/strong>, on the eastern section of the vault, there is a full-length, frontal figure of an archangel holding a sphere and a labarum; the western section of the vault depicts the composition of <em>the Nativity<\/em> (<strong>\u10a1(\u10a4)\u10a7\u10aa(\u10a4)\u10ab\u10a8, \u10b5(\u10b0\u10a8\u10b1\u10b2\u10a4)<\/strong><strong>,<\/strong><strong> \u10b3(\u10b4\u10a0\u10aa\u10a8<\/strong><strong>)<\/strong> \u2013 <strong>Bethlehem<\/strong>, <strong>Christ<\/strong>, <strong>God<\/strong>). In the eastern section of the lower registre the Virgin with Child (<strong>\u10a3(\u10a4)\u10a3\u10a0\u10c2<\/strong><strong> | <\/strong><strong>\u10b6(\u10ab\u10b0)\u10a7(\u10a8)\u10b1\u10a0\u10c2<\/strong> \u2013 <strong>Mother of God<\/strong>) is depicted with her mother St. Anna (<strong>\u10bc<\/strong><strong>(\u10ab\u10a8\u10a3\u10a0)<\/strong><strong>\u10c2<\/strong><strong> \u10a0\u10ac\u10a0 | <\/strong><strong>\u10a3(\u10a4)\u10a3\u10a0\u10c2<\/strong><strong> \u10bc<\/strong><strong>(<\/strong><strong>\u10ab\u10a8<\/strong><strong>)<\/strong><strong>\u10a3<\/strong><strong>(<\/strong><strong>\u10a8<\/strong><strong>)<\/strong><strong>\u10b1\u10a0 || \u10b6<\/strong><strong>(<\/strong><strong>\u10ab<\/strong><strong>\u10b0)<\/strong><strong>\u10a7<\/strong><strong>(<\/strong><strong>\u10a8<\/strong><strong>)<\/strong><strong>\u10b1\u10ab\u10b8<\/strong><strong>(\u10ad)<\/strong><strong>\u10a1\u10a4\u10aa<\/strong><strong>(\u10a8\u10b1\u10a0)<\/strong><strong>\u10a0\u10c2 <\/strong>\u2013 <strong>Saint Anne, Mother of the Holy Virgin<\/strong>. Both are full-length frontal figures. A rider slaying a dragon \u2013 St. Theodore &#8211; is depicted on the western section of the wall (<strong>\u10bc<\/strong><strong>(\u10ab\u10a8\u10a3\u10a0)<\/strong><strong>\u10c2<\/strong><strong> | \u10a7<\/strong><strong>(\u10a4\u10a5\u10a3\u10ad\u10b0)<\/strong><strong>\u10a4 <\/strong>\u2013 <strong>Saint Theodore<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">A figure of an archangel and a scene of a great feast is depicted on the vault of <strong>the north wall<\/strong> in the same order; a full-length figure of the archangel is represented frontally holding the same insignia (labarum, sphere). Next to it is t<em>he Baptism. <\/em>The scene of <em>the Apparition of Archangel Michael to Joshua<\/em> is depicted in the eastern part of the second registre.
